Ricardo de Paula is a Brazilian freelance dance performer and choreographer.
He was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He began his dance studies in 1987 at ‘Harmonia Studio de Dança’. Since 1989 he has danced as a professional, being hired by several dance companies.
Recently, the artist has been researching physicality body and developing works of contact improvisation and capoeira.
Linking the intimate experience and the larger history through movement and radical research is a delicate and never-ending quest. "O my body, make me always a man who questions" writes Frantz Fanon as a final plea in his essay Black skins, white masks. This could as well be the closing statement of ten years of Grupo Oito."

Get Physical Process
The Get Physical Process has been developed by the dancer and choreographer Ricardo de Paula. It brings together elements of Contemporary Dance, Capoeira Angola, Body-Mind Centering, and Contact Improvisation. In the Get Physical Process, these different principles of movement and imaginations of the body merge into a powerful practice that searches for the strength and sensitivity of individual bodies meeting in motion.
Get Physical builds on the conviction that the capacity of the individual body to grow its senses is enhanced by the exchange happening between dancing bodies. It is a mobile negotiation between individual and group – building trust and collective strength.
In the open classes, we train to acknowledge the own responsibility of the body – in its weight shifts and in its movement. By taking control of the complex interactions that are our body, we train the readiness of the body – its ability to adeptly react towards any situation. We search for stability and alignment within the body, especially the spine, and learn to trust it. We work and strengthen the center of our bodies in order to decentralize our movement. We practice for our bodies to become strong and yet highly sensitive, to be intensely present, and yet tender in our encounters.
Moving the distal bones at any joint (the bones more distant from the center of the body). Moving the proximal bones closer to the center of the body. Every movement begins within us. Through Get Physical Process the floor becomes your tool, reflecting this into your consciousness. By combining basic elements of capoeira and qualities of contemporary dance you will learn to use the floor’s support to become lighter, while also gaining strength. Movement sequences will take you through every level of the space, challenging your boundaries, physically and mentally.
The aim of the class is to create experiences. Experiences within the body to help give a greater knowledge, freedom and power to our movement. Experiences to take us forward. Based on the dance experience of teaching the class technique used in different companies, Ricardo de Paula developed his approach and interpretation of the movement language. His class is instructed by the fusion of techniques.

WORKSHOP: THE PRACTICE OF RESISTANCE
How do acts of resistance shape our bodies and minds?
What does your personal idea of resistance look like?
Where can we find the inspiration to continue resisting actively?
Once again, Grupo Oito invites participants to take part in a two-day research workshop on “resistance”.
We will explore this topic using the Get Physical Process, a physical practice developed by Ricardo De Paula and used by Grupo Oito as a tool to investigate movement. A plurality of perspectives on “resistance” will allow us to discuss resistance in all its complexity: at the level of the body and mind, within interpersonal interactions, and on a social and political scale.

Biography
Ricardo de Paula, born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, works as a freelance dance performer, choreographer, teacher and director. He began his dance studies in 1987, attending dance classes at Harmonia Studio de Dança in Belo Horizonte. There he received his education in classical ballet, jazz and contemporary dance. He worked in many companies, such as Grupo Corpo with Rodrigo Pederneiras (Brazil), DV8 Physical Theater and Staatstheater Kassel.
Since 2003 Ricardo lives in Berlin and has taken part in research projects with an extensive range of companies and artists, including DV8/Lloyd Newson (2007), Sasha Waltz (2006), Felix Ruckert (2005), Ahn Eun-Me (2005), Sommer Ulrickson (2004), Christoph Winkler (2003), Constanza Macras (2003), Staatstheater Kassel/Ana Mondini (2002). Since 2005 he has developed solo-works as well as mixed media installations/performances and since 2006 he has shown his own works with Grupo Oito, who were invited to Turkey, France and Kenya for guest performances. Furthermore he teaches his Get Physical Process.
